Students from Southern Virginia University undertook a community project to reinvigorate a long-neglected playground at the corner of 34th Street and Locust Avenue in Buena Vista. The playground was developed in the 1970s but had become dilapidated and overgrown. The SVU Student Government competed in a contest and won a $10,000 grant and secured thousands of dollars of materials and financial donations to get the project going. Students performed hundreds of hours of volunteer work to complete the project. City Council on Sept. 18 adopted a resolution of appreciation that was presented to students. Council member Ron Cash, who lives nearby, praised the students’ work, saying the spruced-up playground added much to the neighborhood.
