The Rockbridge County High School golf team won a pair of nine-hole matches against Shenandoah District rivals last week, defeating Staunton and Wilson Memorial last Monday before beating Fort Defiance and Riverheads last Wednesday. Both contests took place at The Club at Ironwood in Staunton.
In a three-team match on the challenging course last Monday, the Wildcats shot a 175, while Wilson Memorial placed second with a 185, and Staunton (201) finished third.
Senior Harrison Tanner fired a six-over-par 42 to lead the Wildcats, while sophomore teammates Joe Vargas and Davis Welsh both shot 44 to tie for RC’s second score. Junior Finbar Looney carded a 45 to complete the Wildcats’ team scoring. Also competing for RC were senior Dean Fafatas (47) and sophomore Parker Flint (50).
The Wildcats showed improvement on the same course last Wednesday, tallying a 168 to beat runnerup Riverheads (181) and third-place Fort Defiance (183).
Fafatas fired a 39 to lead RC, Vargas followed with a 41, Tanner shot a 43, and Welsh posted a 45 to complete the Wildcats’ team scoring. Also competing for RC were Looney and sophomore Hendrick Colvin, both shooting 46, and Flint (50).
Pleased with both matches, RC head coach Garret Huffman said, “Everyone on the team continues to work hard and support each other as we look to make a strong push to finish the season.”
The Wildcats, who ended the week with a 24-stroke lead over Waynesboro for first-place in the district, were scheduled to return to The Club at Ironwood for their final 18-hole district match.
From the district, which the Wildcats won, the top two teams and the top five individuals will advance to Region 3C tournament, which will take place next Monday, Sept. 29, at 10 a.m. at Spotswood Country Club in Harrisonburg. For updates, visit www. thenews-gazette.com.
