United Way Announces Allocations

United Way of Rockbridge, Lexington and Buena Vista (UWR) has announced the nonprofit recipients of its annual allocations funding. UWR will provide $80,000 to 12 nonprofits.

“The United Way is honored to continue to play a role in helping our community meet the needs of its vulnerable populations. We’re confident that the organizations we are working with this year will work together to improve access to food, healthcare, education and community,” said Jennifer Dent, executive director of UWR.

This year’s allocation recipients include: Blue Ridge Legal Services, Brain Injury Connections of the Shenandoah Valley, Campus Kitchen at W&L, Blue Ridge CASA for Children, The Community Table, Rockbridge Area Health Center, Rockbridge Area Relief Association, The Talking Book Center, Unity4Kids, Valley Program for Aging Services, Yellow Brick Road Early Learning Center, and YMCA – Early Learning Center.

Last allocations cycle, area nonprofits served the Rockbridge area in many ways. For example, 4,754 people received vital food assistance, 177 local homebound adults received healthy, home-delivered meals. Throughout Lexington, Buena Vista and the county, 24,000 backpacks of nonperishable food were distributed to 16 different schools. Additionally, 1,611 individuals received financial assistance with rent, utilities and heating fuel, and 118 residents received legal assistance.

“We are thrilled to complete this year’s allocations process,” said board member and campaign chair Liz Elizondo Schroepfer. “As we kick off our annual campaign this month, we’re invigorated by our community’s accomplishments and excited to see what the nonprofits in our area do next!”

UWR’s annual campaign kicks off this month, and this year, the organization will focus its efforts on allocations as well as creating a volunteer program to assist nonprofits in a tangible way throughout the year. To learn more, stop by UWR’s booth at Buena Vista Mountain Day on Oct. 11.
