Against Tree Loss, Airport

Sept. 15, 2025 Editor, The News-Gazette: I agree with Arvid Christiansen’s recent letter and others’ opinions in disfavor of paving Courthouse Square: cost, safety hazards when wet and icy, inaccessibility of steps, etc. It didn’t include another major downside: heat. Absorbed from the sun, these pavers will raise the overall temperature of the area for five to six months of the year, especially with the removal of the large trees. No one will use the dang area.

In a similar vein and on a larger scale is the proposed airport. This shortsighted project has been rejected at least once in the past, and will cater only to the elite (sound familiar?) Many, many acres of green will disappear forever. And who will pay for this costly experiment? TONI WILLIAMS Lexington
