Sept. 10, 2025 Editor, The News-Gazette: In the opening scene of Shakespeare’s “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” the protagonist encounters three witches stirring a foul brew. They prophesy that Macbeth will someday become King of Scotland.
Today we see three real-life witches, Christy Noem, Pam Bondi and Tulsi Gabbard who hail their master, Donald Trump, as “King” while executing his agenda. Each adds gruesome ingredients to a kettle of diversion and deception. Noem deports immigrants, Bondi tramples justice, and Gabbard erodes national security.
As they perform Trump’s bidding, a line from the play, “Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn and cauldron bubble,” reverberates through the halls of government.
While their methods are comparable, the goals of the fictional and real-life witches differ. The witches in the play deceive Macbeth to orchestrate his downfall. By contrast, the present-day witches inflate Trump’s ego and implement his authoritarian regime. FRANK SETTLE Lexington
