Kaine’s Statements Questioned

Sept. 8, 2025 Editor, The News-Gazette: Just wondering if anyone who voted to reelect Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine last year is questioning if he/she did the right thing?

Kaine stated last week that humans aren’t given rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness by their Creator, but that these rights can only be granted by government. He included a reference to the Islamic Iran regime which persecutes religious minorities on exactly this basis. “They do it,” he explained, “because they believe that they understand what natural rights are from their creator.”

Is Kaine familiar with our U.S. Constitution and its amendments? The very first amendment included by our Founding Fathers states: “Congress [i.e., Government] shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; ….”

Our Founding Fathers didn’t insist that every American be a Christian, nor an Islamist, a Buddhist, an Atheist or whatever. But, they did believe in a true Creator who endowed all mankind with these natural rights, and wanted no human, including government workers, to infringe in any way on those rights.

I’m very disturbed that such a man will continue to represent me for another five years in D.C. SUSAN WOOD Glasgow
