Looking to build on last year’s success, the Rockbridge County High School competition cheerleading team will play host for a competition today, Wednesday, at 7 p.m., with six teams taking part.
The competition, the Wildcat Rumble, will take place in the RC gym, with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. Other teams in the competition will be RC’s Shenandoah District rival Stuarts Draft and four nondistrict opponents. Admission is $7. The Wildcats switched from the Valley District to the Shenandoah District this year.
The Wildcats are scheduled to perform at 8 p.m., following the William Byrd, Stuarts Draft, Salem and Christiansburg cheerleaders, with Louisa County slated to finish the competition at 8:15. Awards for the top three teams are scheduled to be presented at 8:30.
RC, under the direction of head coach Shannon Bryan, won its home competition last September and went on to place third in the Valley District before winning the Region 3C competition, its first-ever regional title in program history. In their first state competition in 25 years, the Wildcats placed eighth at the Class 3 state competition.
The Wildcats started this season well with a strong performance at the Big Orange Invitational on Saturday at Heritage High School in Lynchburg.
A story and photos from the competition will be in next week’s newspaper.
