Wildcats Stay Atop District

Remaining at the top of the Shenandoah District standings, the Rockbridge County High School golf team won its district match at Gypsy Hill Golf Club on Monday of last week in Staunton. The next day, the Wildcats placed third of four teams in nondistrict action at Lake Monticello Golf Course in Palmyra.

In the district match, the Wildcats shot a 323 to edge runner-up Waynesboro’s 324. The Wildcats have won all three of their 18-hole district matches this season. Wilson Memorial tallied a 351 to place third of nine teams, and Fort Defiance and Staunton both shot 356 to tie for fourth place. Rounding out the standings were Riverheads (359), Alleghany (378), Buffalo Gap (387) and Stuarts Draft (398).

WM’s Jaxson Devereux was the medalist, firing a 74 on the 18-hole, par-71 course. Waynesboro’s Berkeley Gibb posted a 75 to place second.

Leading the Wildcats and placing third was senior Harrison Tanner, firing a 77, while senior teammate Dean Fafatas finished fourth with a 79. RC’s third scorer was sophomore Joe Vargas, carding an 81, while sophomore teammate Davis Welsh shot an 86 to complete the Wildcats’ team scoring. Also competing for RC were junior Finbar Looney (87) and sophomore Parker Flint (96).

Reviewing the day and his team’s performance, RC head coach Garret Huffman said, “It was a beautiful day with perfect weather out on the course. Everyone is continuing to work hard and getting better each day. Proud of the work everyone puts in!”

RC Third At LM

In nondistrict action on Tuesday of last week, the Wildcats placed third of four teams at Lake Monticello Golf Course.

Monticello won the ninehole match with a 166, while Wilson Memorial (181) placed second. Completing the standings were RC (184) and Fluvanna County (187).

Vargas led the Wildcats, firing an eight-over-par 44. RC’s second scorer was Tanner, carding a 46, while Flint and Welsh both shot 47. Also competing for the Wildcats were Fafatas (48) and Looney (58).

RC was scheduled to face Shenandoah District rivals on Monday at The Club at Ironwood in Staunton and return there today, Wednesday, to take on Fort Defiance and Riverheads at 4:15 p.m.

As one of the two Shenandoah District teams to advance, the Wildcats will focus on preparing for the Region 3C tournament, which will take place on Monday, Sept. 29, at 10 a.m. at Lake Monticello Golf Course.
