South Korean Artist Displaying Works

South Korean Artist Displaying Works
THIS IMAGE IS ENTITLED “Minjeong An, Self-Portrait” (detail), 2007.

Washington and Lee University’s Staniar Gallery is presenting “Private Pictograph,” a solo exhibition by South Korean artist Minjeong An.

The exhibit will be on view through Oct. 17. An will also give an artist’s talk on Tuesday, Sept. 23, at 5:30 p.m. in Wilson Concert Hall in the Lenfest Center for the Arts, followed by a reception.

The exhibition and reception events are free and open to the public.

Using mathematical and scientific principles, Minjeong An creates digital renderings of subjects, including the mother, the family, the natural world and the human body. These chart-like, diagrammatic drawings quantify and visualize abstract notions, with a specific emphasis on the realm of emotion.

An was born in Chorwon, South Korea, and currently lives and works in Seoul. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts from Seoul National University of Science and Technology, where she is currently a parttime lecturer. An has exhibited at institutions around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, P21 Gallery in Seoul, and Seventeen Gallery in London.

This exhibition is co-sponsored by the Department of Mathematics.

Staniar Gallery is located on the second floor of Wilson Hall in the Lenfest Center.
