Local artist, educator and author Wendy Christine Duke will be at the Nelson Gallery at 27 W. Washington St. from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20, to talk about her new book, “Contemporary Oshi-e: An Introduction.”
Contemporary Oshi-e (pronounced oh-shea) is a new version of the traditional oshi-e craft from Japan, where Duke learned the technique over 55 years ago. In her new version, no drawing or sewing is involved, and only inexpensive, easy-to-find materials and tools are used. Following a fourstep process outlined in the book, students are able to complete their first projects in just a few hours using only mat board, fabric, batting and glue. The result is very dimensional, quilt-like and stunning.
Local classes are scheduled for this fall, and sign-ups begin at this event. Her book (both paperback and hard cover) will be available for purchase. Examples of her art work and informal demonstrations will be ongoing all afternoon.
