Aug. 29, 2025 Editor, The News-Gazette: “It’s not what you do, it’s how you do it.” So goes a saying attributed to former UCLA basketball coach John Wooden and others. It also applies to my favorite indoor sport: politics.
Politics is serious business. Who won the last presidential contest is more important than who won the last Super Bowl, although I have friends in Philly who will disagree. How politics is played is more important than what our elected leaders do. It is how they do it, how they do lasting change and how they create hope. The best way I know is with trust and stability.
Soon Virginia will have a statewide election, another opportunity to fire a shot for freedom and have states and localities rule themselves. This time it won’t be heard around the world, but it will be heard a hundred miles up I-95 from Richmond. Don’t worry, Washington and the nation will hear Lexington’s second shot.
Need I say any more? I rather not. This conservative Republican will forget Abigail’s party label. Instead, I’ll think about saving both parties from failure. America works best with two strong political parties. Vote. It’s how you do it. DAVID REYNOLDS Rockbridge County
