Rockbridge Golfers Overcome Alleghany

The Rockbridge County High School golf team defeated Shenandoah District rival Alleghany in a competitive nine-hole match on Tuesday of last week at Cliff View Golf Club in Covington.

L ed by medalist Dean Fafatas, the Wildcats shot a 171 to beat the Cougars’ 175. Fafatas, a senior, fired a three-over-par 39 to take first. Alleghany’s best individual score was a 41.

RC’s second scorer was sophomore Joe Vargas, posting a 42, while sophomore teammate Hendrick Colvin carded a 43 for the Wildcats’ third score. Senior Harrison Tanner and junior Finbar Looney both shot 47 to tie for RC’s fourth score. Also competing for the Wildcats was sophomore Davis Welsh, firing a 48.

Proud of his team’s progress, RC head coach Garret Huffman said, “This team continues to work hard each and every day.”

The Wildcats were scheduled to play an 18-hole match against Shenandoah District rivals on Monday at Gypsy Hill Golf Club in Staunton before traveling for a nine-hole nondistrict match yesterday at Lake Monticello Golf Course in Palmyra, with Fluvanna County playing host. Next up they’ll travel for a district match at The Club at Ironwood on Monday in Staunton, starting at 9 a.m.
