Aug. 25, 2025 Editor, The News-Gazette: “We should all be looking for ways to love these kids better than continuing to send them to school hungry under the guise of an income tax break, even if the solution has to be financed out of our state’s (Georgia) abundantly funded $17 billion rainy-day fund.”
With those words, the former lieutenant governor of Georgia, Geoff Duncan, announced in an op-ed in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he was leaving the Republican Party to become a Democrat.
He said it was becoming a daily struggle to love his neighbor and remain a Republican. He cited the Republican Party’s inexcusable dismantling of our health care system and Medicaid, their lack of support for their poor and their increasingly deranged stances on gun control and “heartless” and “pointless” immigration policies.
He feels the best way to love thy neighbor is through compassionate public policy. It seems like this true Christian has truly understood Jesus’ message that outside of loving God, loving your neighbor was the most important thing any of us can do. And, he has finally found the best path to do so-compassionate public policy.
We all pay our taxes. We should all accept and understand that we deserve “compassionate public policy” from our government.
What is wrong with so many Christians who claim to follow the teachings of The Master yet throw their votes behind the closest thing to an Anti-Christ in his words, actions and behavior since Hitler. Actions speak so much louder than words. Showing up in church on Sunday does not a Christian make - Treating all your “neighbors” with unconditional love and loving kindness does.
