Boxerwood Nature Center and Woodland Garden will host two upcoming sessions for those interested in volunteering with the organization this fall.
Led by Boxerwood staff, each one-hour program will provide an overview of the organization and its work, outline several volunteer pathways, and explain how Boxerwood trains and supports volunteers in those roles.
The volunteer pathways include direct hands-on work like helping with the woodland garden or assisting with visiting school programs. Other pathways provide options for those who may have more limited time and/ or physical capacity. These opportunities include representing Boxerwood and its stewardship mission through weekend shifts as garden (kiosk) greeters or as community event “tabletop hosts.” Those attending either information session will have an opportunity to learn more about their particular areas of interest without obligation.
“Whether it’s once a week or just a couple of times a season there’s a place for you as a Boxerwood volunteer,” said Hannah West, Boxerwood operations director.
Currently, more than 80 volunteers support the work of this community-focused nonprofit. “That may sound like a lot,” West added, “but we’re a nimble organization with a big heart and an even bigger mission and our small part-time staff can’t do it all: we are truly a collaborative venture.”
No prior knowledge or experience is required to volunteer, noted West, though love of the outdoors is a necessity. Interested persons may attend either session on Saturday, Sept. 13 or Tuesday, Sept. 16, with advance registration is requested. Both sessions, which share the same content and format, will take place 10 to 11 a.m. at the Boxerwood Lodge, 963 Ross Road, Lexington, with light refreshments served.
Immediately afterwards, Boxerwood staff will also offer attendees an optional tour of the 15-acre woodland garden.
