Local fire departments are mourning the loss of firefighter Zack Reese, who died from injuries sustained in an off-duty auto accident.

Reese had served with Staunton Fire and Rescue since December 2024. In a Facebook post Wednesday, the department announced his death with “profound sadness,” noting his prior service with Augusta County Fire-Rescue and as a volunteer with the Raphine Volunteer Fire Department.

“Zack has been with the department since December 2024 and previously worked for Augusta County Fire-Rescue and volunteered with Raphine Volunteer Fire Department,” the post read. “Our thoughts are with his family and friends. He will be missed by many.”

The Buena Vista Fire Department also shared condolences on Facebook, asking the community to keep Reese’s family in their prayers. “Sending our heartfelt condolences to Mandi, Will, Steve, and Zack’s brother, sisters, and children, as well as his fire/rescue family from all of us at BVFD,” the post said.

The Raphine Volunteer Fire Company, where Reese had also served, wrote in its tribute: “Our hearts are shattered for the loss of one of our own!”

Reese was the son of Mandi McComas and Steve Reese, who is currently a candidate for Rockbridge County Supervisor.
