Woman Airlifted Following Crash

A woman was airlifted to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital after a single-vehicle crash on U.S. 60 last Wednesday that left her pinned beneath her car. A child riding in the vehicle was also hospitalized.

According to Virginia State Police Sgt. Richard Garletts, the crash occurred around 1:41 p.m. in the 1700 block of Midland Trail west of Buena Vista when a Volkswagen overturned. The female driver was trapped under the vehicle, while the child passenger — whose age and sex were not immediately available — was transported to a hospital by ground.

Rockbridge County Fire Chief Nathan Ramsey said multiple agencies responded, including Rockbridge County Fire-Rescue, Buena Vista Fire Department, Buena Vista Rescue Squad, the Rockbridge County Sheriff’s Office, Lexington Fire Department, and Virginia State Police.

Crews called in a large wrecker operated by Jimmy Southers to lift the vehicle off the driver. Once freed, she was quickly removed and flown by helicopter to Roanoke.

The cause of the crash was not included in the reports. Both eastbound and westbound lanes of U.S. 60 were closed during the rescue to allow the helicopter to land on the roadway.
