A special sign-making event will take place Friday, Aug. 29, during the weekly “Hearts for Democracy” citizen rally which occurs each Friday in Lexington.
Arising as a grassroots citizen action last February, the weekly public event now takes place in front of Hopkins Green, at the corner of Jefferson and Nelson streets, from 4 to 5:30 pm.
According to organizers, the upcoming sign-making will be a time for citizens of all ages to identify what they value about our country and then express through their hand-crafted signs “what they want to defend, advance, or restore.”
Anticipating the upcoming event, one of the rally’s original organizers, Lexington resident Caroline Coons, noted, “The spirit of the rally is to stand up for what we love and value, to become less divided as citizens and have conversations to understand each other and find common ground.”
For Coons, the goal is productive civic vision, adding “whereas protests grab people’s attention with bold messaging about what people dislike and disdain, our Friday rallies are part of a growing movement that gives people a place to envision the future we want.”
In the community spirit of the Aug. 29 event, organizers are providing all the necessary signmaking materials. “plus homebaked cookies,” added Coons.
