The Effinger Ruritan Club would like to thank all those who attended and were a part of their 35th Palmer Ice Cream Supper held on Saturday, Aug. 16, at the Palmer Community Center. The evening drew approximately 1,032 patrons of all ages and 70 volunteers who enjoyed music, good food, delicious homemade ice cream and the opportunity to gather with friends and enjoy the fellowship. Those in attendance were also able to visit the Rockbridge Regional Library’s bookmobile, sign up for library cards and obtain books.

Special thanks are extended to the event’s leadership team and to all the Effinger Ruritan Club members and their families who worked diligently to make the event so successful. Appreciation is also extended to the members of the Palmer Community Center, the Boy Scouts who directed the parking of cars, and to the many volunteers for their help in making the event run so smoothly. Funds raised from the sale of food, ice cream and the 50/50 drawing will be used to support the Palmer Community Center and the Effinger Ruritan Club.

The Collierstown Presbyterian Women concluded their annual “Kids Kit Campaign” on Sunday, Aug. 17. A goal of preparing 225 canvas tote bags of school supplies to be distributed to needy students was surpassed, resulting in 315 kits being made. Special thanks to Louise Tardy who made all the attractive and sturdy canvas bags that were filled. Many thanks to everyone who gave school supplies or monetary gifts that helped make this project a church and community wide effort! The kits will be distributed by Church World Service to children in the United States and around the world.

Leadership of the 9 a.m. chapel service for Lake Robertson campers during the month of August is being provided by Roger Lees of the Collierstown Presbyterian Church. Community residents are invited to join the campers attending the outdoor service at 9 a.m. each Sunday.

The Collierstown Presbyterian Church will hold its annual summer outdoor worship service and covered-dish picnic lunch on the church grounds at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 24. Burr Datz will lead the worship service and special music will be provided by Stacy Stevens.

A community revival will be held on Thursday, Aug. 28, at Lake Robertson in the Nelson W. Hall Pavilion beginning at 6 p.m. The speaker for the event is Dorsey Hostetter. Special music will be provided by Junior Painter & Friends. The event is being hosted by Union View Advent Christian Church, Collierstown Baptist Church, Collierstown and Mount Horeb United Methodist Churches, Oxford and Collierstown Presbyterian Churches and the Rapps Mill Church. Refreshments will be provided. All are invited to attend this special evening of worship, music and fellowship.

Plans are underway for the 185th homecoming at Collierstown United Methodist Church on Sunday, Oct. 12, at 11 a.m. Guest speaker will be the Rev. Doug Forrester, assistant to the bishop/ chief operating officer for the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church. The worship service will be a joint service with the Mt. Horeb congregation.
