Aug. 13 - Tickets went on sale today for the fall train excursions based in Goshen featuring the historic Norfolk & Western Class J No. 611 steam locomotive. The excursions are a joint venture of the Virginia Scenic Railway, the Virginia Museum of Transportation, the Steam Railroading Institute in Michigan, and the Virginia Mechanical Preservation Society in Goshen.
The excursions are scheduled to run on five weekends, starting the last weekend of September, and tickets are now available on the Virginia Scenic Railways website.
The News-Gazette visited the Virginia Museum of Transportation in July to see the maintenance work being conducted on the 611 in preparation for the fall excursions. Below are links to four videos shot by Mary Woodson featuring commentary by Zac McGinnis, steam operations manager. Three of the videos concern the maintenance work. The fourth features a look inside the cab of the historic engine.
