B.G. Locher Jr., executive vice president of Locher Silica Corp., announced that the Goshen Sand Plant, in operation since 1925, would be closing “due to stringent environmental control laws and other abnormal conditions.” - Rockbridge County School Board chairman Ellis Davis signed the contract for the new vocational-technical school, paving the way for construction at the site on U.S. 11 north of Lexington. - Lexington’s Green Berets were the winners in the 24team women’s state softball tournament sponsored by the U.S. Slow-Pitch Softball Association held at the Lexington recreation field.

Soaring gas prices didn’t seem have an impact on anyone’s driving habits as business at the local filling stations remained brisk. A random survey of local stations revealed increases ranging from 17 to 34 cents in the cost of a gallon of gas in a 10day period. - Auto Recyclers, an automobile salvage and recycling company, made plans to move into the long-abandoned Reeves Brothers building in Buena Vista.
