Aug. 8, 2025 Editor, The News-Gazette: Our Congressman Ben Cline repeats the notion that the “Big Beautiful Bill” will result in lower taxes for all of us. This may be true, but close examination reveals that the wealthiest benefit the most. According to the nonpartisan Center for Budget and Policy, the bill delivers a tax cut of about $300 to families earning less than $50,000, while providing taxpayers earning $1 million or more a year a $90,000 tax reduction.
To pay for the tax cuts, government agencies that protect the environment, safeguard our health, safety and food supply; support education, scientific research and the arts; provide domestic disaster relief; direct air traffic; and forecast the weather will be reduced in size or eliminated. Congressman Cline, a fearful servant of President Trump and his well-healed associates, supports these actions, which diminish our quality of life. In November 2027, we can elect a congressman who dares to serve us, not a supplicant to an aspiring dictator. FRANK SETTLE Lexington
