New Views Theatre Offers Puppet Play

On Friday, Aug. 8, and Saturday, Aug. 9, at 7 p.m., the new local theater group New Views Theatre is inviting area residents to free workshop performances of the devised puppet play, “In Between.”

The play was created, and will be performed by, Lexington’s own Reverie Puppets, and made possible by a Lenfest Summer Grant to Owen Collins from Washington and Lee University. The play will be performed in the Johnson Theatre at the Lenfest Center at Washington and Lee University.

What is a devised puppet play? Puppet theater is one of the world’s oldest theater traditions and is part of nearly every culture worldwide. Devised theater is a relatively new mode of creation. It’s the process of collaboratively creating a new play without a pre-existing script where the creators are also the performers. Reverie combines the old and the new, and the Reverie collaborators, Owen Collins and Samuel Camp, give themselves a set number of days to craft something that will captivate their audiences.

“Devised theatre adds an extra layer of complexity to the performance,” said Collins. “And puppet theater pushes boundaries,” Camp added.

Seating is limited, so reserve seats by emailing William Duell at [email protected].

Note that this play explores some dark themes and is not suitable for young children.
