Sgt. Norman Claytor Jr. of the Guns team receives a congratulatory handshake from Kevin Mikels of the Hoses team as he approaches home plate during the second annual Guns & Hoses Softball Games for local first responders on Tuesday of last week at Virginia Military Institute’s Lamore Field at Gray Minor Stadium. Claytor, a cancer survivor who was an honorary captain and a courtesy runner for the Guns, which won both games, was honored while being allowed to score. Applauding Claytor are home plate umpire Justin Higgins (far left) and Sgt. Scottie Sorrells (center) and Deputy Josh Chestnut (far right) of the Guns team. Making up the Guns were local police officers and members of the Rockbridge County Sheriff’s Office, while the Hoses were comprised of members of the local fire departments.
