Dominion Power’s plans to replace a transmission line through Glen Maury Park in Buena Vista are going to necessitate the removal of 315 trees.
Ed Armentrout, Buena Vista’s director of parks and recreation, delivered this news to City Council on July 17. He didn’t know the timetable for this project but said Dominion representatives would be meeting with city officials in the near future to explain the details.
Armentrout said he found out about the pending removal of the trees when he made inquiries after noticing some trees around the power lines being marked. He said the city has been in contact with the forestry department to talk about ways to mitigate the damage.
A temporary road that’s going to be built through the park for the power line project could be transformed later into a walking trail, he suggested, and he also planned to see about planting new trees to replace the ones that are taken down. He said he does worry about what the visual impact will be for the next 10 to 20 years, until the new trees have achieved significant growth.
Dominion Power in May got approval from Rockbridge County for the second phase of a rebuild for a 115 Kv transmission line from the Balcony Falls substation, southeast of Glasgow, to Buena Vista.
