Fifteen local and area artists will be featured for the month of August in “Consignors’ Showcase” at Artists in Cahoots in downtown Lexington. The opening reception is Friday, Aug. 1, from 5 to 7 p.m.
A wide range of three-dimensional work is included from artists Katherine Benner, Rebecca Dale, Neil Duman, Norma Geddes, Elizabeth Gordon, Jane Fancher Hendley, Barbara Coyle Holt, Noah Hughey, Molly Lyons, Sue McCoy, John Owen, Alex Pettigrew, Anne Scarpa McCauley, Willie Simmons (in memoriam), and Ryland Warner.
“As the oldest artist cooperative in the state of Virginia, Artist in Cahoots is blessed to host the work of many talented artists, several of whom are consignors from the area,” said long-time member and jeweler Maureen Worth.
Among the pieces to be featured is a meticulous handcrafted glass plate, “Rainforest of the Sea,” by Molly Lyons. It is made from small, delicately patterned clusters of stained glass that are arranged together then permanently fused and slumped into the plate.
Barbara Holt, from the Staunton area, will be showing a colorful collaged garden motif entitled, “Garden Gate,” made of found paper, found objects and acrylic paint on wood.
Also, among the 15 works on display, is one by local mixed media and fiber artist Rebecca Dale. Dale creates handmade journals that can be used as backyard science journals, travel journals, or “fairy journals,” among other uses or themes. Dale will show a “travel junk journal” with a cover made of oxide-stained, distressed and recycled denim and other fibers. The handmade paper pages are chock full of findings, drawings, watercolor sketches and other imagery intended to inspire personalized creative journaling within the open spaces of the journal.
