Human Trafficking Indictments Returned

A Lexington man was indicted by a Rockbridge County Grand Jury last week on multiple felony counts of human trafficking and selling drugs.

Earl Wayne Smith, 67, was indicted on July 14 on nine felony counts of human trafficking for a time period between July 1, 2024 and Feb. 10, 2025. He was also indicted on nine felony counts of selling schedule I or II drugs over the same time period. In Virginia, human trafficking is a class four felony and carries a sentence of two to 10 years. Selling a schedule I or II drug carries a prison sentence of five to 40 years in the Commonwealth.

Smith is also charged with five misdemeanors: Three counts of residing in a bawdy place, one count of solicitation of prostitution and one count of using a car to aid in prostitution.

A hearing to advise on attorney arrangements for the felony indictments is scheduled for July 28, and arraignment for the misdemeanors is scheduled for Sept. 8.
