One in 2 households with young children struggle to afford the diapers necessary to keep their children clean, dry and healthy, according to the National Diaper Bank. To address this problem, the Rockbridge Area Relief Association set a goal to collect 15,000 diapers during its current diaper drive event, following up on the success of last year’s drive.
The diaper drive is taking place now through Aug. 6 and is organized by RARA’s summer interns. Collection bins have been placed at local businesses where anyone can leave a donation. The drop-off locations include the RARA building, Pronto Gelateria, Yellow Brick Road, Pure Eats, Earth Fire Spirit Pottery Art Gallery, Straws, Asunder Coffee Roastery, and the libraries in Lexington, Buena Vista and Glasgow.
Diapers collected through the drive will be distributed to local families who come to RARA’s Neighborhood Grocery. While RARA receives a grant through the Dan and Betsy Brittigan Endowment Fund at Lexington Presbyterian Church to purchase diapers, they are a popular item and are distributed quickly. RARA relies on community donations the rest of the year to keep the diapers fully stocked.
Although the diaper drive will only last three weeks, donations of baby supplies, health and hygiene items and food are accepted throughout the year.
