Hull’s Readies 75th Anniversary Events

Hull’s Drive-In, the first nonprofit, community-owned drivein movie theater in the United States, is celebrating 75 years in operation with two featured events on Wednesday, Aug. 6, and Saturday, Aug. 9, as part of a weeklong anniversary celebration.

Since opening its doors in 1950, Hull’s has become a cherished institution in the Shenandoah Valley and a model for community-driven preservation of Americana. Rescued from closure in 1999 by a grassroots group known as Hull’s Angels, Inc., the drive-in continues to thrive thanks to local support, first-run films, and a classic movie-going experience, said a spokesperson.

A concert and classic film night is slated for Wednesday, Aug. 6. A live performance at 7 p.m. by Cash Unchained, the premier Johnny Cash tribute band, presented by The Virginia Opry, will be followed by a screening of the 1986 film “Stagecoach” (featuring Johnny Cash).

Tickets are $30 and include both the concert and movie. Purchase tickets at: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/ cash-unchained-at-hullsdrive- in-75th-anniversary-tickets- 1397451498049.

Hull’s 75th birthday celebration will then be held on Saturday, Aug. 9.

All classic car owners are encouraged to join Hull’s for Vintage Car Night. Vintage car owners receive free admission and a prime spot to display their vehicles on the lot.

The fun continues with a vendor market before show time featuring local businesses (vendors interested in participating should contact Hull’s).

There will also be a “Happy Birthday Hull’s” group photo and free birthday cupcakes at the concession stand while supplies last.

In addition to these featured events, Hull’s will offer familyfriendly movies and themed activities Thursday through Sunday. Check out Hull’s on Facebook and Instagram for a full line-up of events.

“This anniversary is a celebration of resilience, tradition, and the community that makes Hull’s special,” said Rhianna Schlief, executive director. “We’re thrilled to invite the public to these milestone events and can’t wait to see familiar faces on the lot.”
