The establishment of a community chorus and orchestra was getting closer to becoming a reality as sponsorship of the musical groups was promised by the United Virginia Bank – Rockbridge through at least the bicentennial year. - The start of construction of Lexington’s Woods Creek Park project was assured as city manager John Doane announced the rewarding of a $97,978 federal grant to the city. - The Rockbridge County School Board unanimously voted to accept the low base bid of $1,057,000 submitted for the construction of a new vocationaltechnical school to be completed within a year’s time.

Longtime Buena Vista Mayor Harold Kidd announced he’d be stepping down at the end of September.
- Parties were held at both Books & Co. and The Bookery to celebrate the midnight release of “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.” - Residents of Kendal at Lexington celebrated the community’s fifth anniversary with cake and champagne at a Sunday brunch. Present and past board members attended a dinner later that evening.
