July 2, 2025 Editor, The News-Gazette: Let’s say that there’s a couple named Ashley and Wyatt who have a cow calf farm operation in Rockbridge County on the farm where Wyatt grew up. Wyatt also works full time at a hardware store, and Ashley works full time at a bank. With the three incomes they are getting by okay. They have two children. Ashley’s dad died six months ago, and her mother, Laura, has Dementia. Thank God they found a senior living facility where she can get 24 hour care, and they can visit her frequently. Medicare and Medicaid make this possible.
With the “Big Beautiful Bill” that passed this week, Medicaid/ Medicare will be hugely diminished or disappear. Since Medicare provides funding for most nursing homes as well as health care for seniors, Laura will be sent home when the operators can’t afford the staff they need. Now what will Ashley and Wyatt do? And in the cruel situation their family now find themselves their daughter Penny can forget about going to community college to become a vet tech.
Sen. Mitch McConnell (R) said about people losing their health care, “They’ll get over it.” He has no concerns about losing his health care. The Senate provides him with comprehensive health insurance.
Medicare and Medicaid are the only source of health insurance for people with limited incomes. Losing that insurance will be devastating to around 14 million Americans.
While scheming to remove health care from millions of Americans, Trump and his Republican Congressmen have secured massive tax cuts for folks in the top 1% of wealth. Let’s collect a fair income tax from them, and help others get health care.
Senators and representatives keep track of calls they receive.
Give Ben Cline a call at (202) 225-5431. Ask him about Medicare and Medicaid. JEFFERSON SHINGLETON Brownsburg
