Area Republicans Observe Flag Day

Celebrate America was the theme of the Rockbridge Area Republican Committee special social meeting at the Virginia Horse Center Saturday afternoon to mark Flag Day and the 250th Anniversary of the U.S. Army.

The 1957 Red Skelton video of how his old school teacher explained the meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance and the 1982 Robin Williams tribute to the American flag were shown.

RARC Chairwoman Jan Lowry told the group, “We celebrate ‘No King Day’ on the Fourth of July.” She gave a short history of Flag Day and the 250-year history of the U.S. Army, both these events being celebrated on June 14. She said, “These are the events we choose to celebrate today.”

The members who served in the Army as well as other branches of the military were recognized. The social gathering ended in time to allow those attending to get home in time to watch the Army 250th Anniversary Parade, concerts and fireworks on television.

The next community action scheduled was the cleaning of older veteran graves in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Lexington on June 23.
