High Bridge

Esther Pennington, 291-2629

High Bridge Presbyterian Church celebrated Independence Day this past Sunday with a surprise visit from Col. John Brodie, recently retired band leader from Virginia Military Institute. Brodie accompanied pianist Lea Braford on all hymns and special music. During the worship service, Brodie played all the main themes for each military branch, and family and friends were invited to stand for any family in any of the branches. Due to illness, our regular pianist, Donna Armentrout, is on medical leave.

Also, another surprise guest was 2nd Lt. Nate Mayfield who is stationed in California, and his wife, Catherine. Nate attended our church last year while he was attending VMI and a member as John McCoy’s rugby team.

Other visitors were Amy and Nate Willis of Bedford, and Mark and Max Pennington of West Virginia. Everyone enjoyed a wonderful fellowship and meal after worship.

The Presbyterian Women’s afternoon and evening circles will not meet in July.

Vacation Bible school will be held at Cave Mountain Lake on Saturday, July 19.

High Bridge will celebrate our 255th anniversary this fall on the weekend Sept. 27-28. Please join us for different celebration and history activities each day. On Saturday, Dr. Tom Camden, retired from Washington and Lee University, will give a program at 2 p.m. on the history of High Bridge and the old community of Springfield. A tent will be set up outside with refreshments to follow. On Sunday, we will have regular worship with a catered lunch in the tent to follow.

The food pantry will open promptly at 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 5, and close at 11 a.m. The High Bridge congregation is collecting pork and beans for the food pantry in June.
