A water main break at the corner of Jordan and Long Hollow roads Saturday morning led to a drop in pressure for the Rockbridge County Public Service Authority’s Long Hollow water system. As a result, a boil water notice was issued for approximately 230 PSA customers that has lasted several days.
The water leak was extensive but PSA crews were able to locate and repair it by mid-afternoon Saturday. The health department mandated the issuance of a boil water notice that won’t be lifted until, at the earliest, Wednesday morning.
Melissa Alexander, PSA executive director, said the PSA is required to submit two water quality samples taken at least 16 hours apart. Because the leak occurred on a Saturday and testing laboratories were closed over the weekend, sampling could not begin until Monday. It is anticipated that the results from a second water sample will be known by Monday morning.
“We understand the inconvenience this may cause and want to assure our customers that we responded as quickly and effectively as possible under the circumstances,” said Alexander. “All actions taken were based on guidance from the health department, and we appreciate [our customers’] patience as we work to ensure the safety and reliability of the water supply.”
