A crowded field of candidates will be vying for election to Buena Vista City Council this fall. Seven candidates qualified by last Tuesday’s filing deadline to get their names on the ballot for three City Council seats in the Nov. 4 elections.
Incumbents Danny Staton, Stanley Coffey and Melvin Henson are seek- ing re-election and are being challenged by Frankie Huffman III, Amy Gilliam, Stephanie Noel Branch and Pamela Camden.
Other candidates who have qualified to have their names on the ballot in the local Nov. 4 elections, and the offices they are seeking, are as follows: Buena Vista mayor – Tyson Cooper, Jesse Lineberry.
Buena Vista School Board – Roy Mohler, Lisa Kerr, Ray Gilbert.
Buena Vista sheriff – Randy Hamilton, Chris Wheeler, Alan Buzzard.
Buena Vista commissioner of revenue – Ashton Beverly.
Buena Vista treasurer – Amy Hudson.
Buena Vista commonwealth’s attorney – Joshua Elrod.
Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors, Kerrs Creek District – Boyd Brown II, Steve Hart.
Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors, Walkers Creek District – Jay Lewis, Steve Reese.
Rockbridge County School Board, Kerrs Creek District – Catie Brown.
Rockbridge County School Board, South River District – Corey Berkstresser.
Lexington commissioner of revenue – Kelly Glass.
Lexington treasurer – Pat DeLaney.
Glasgow mayor – Paul Williams.
Glasgow Town Council – Lisa Rogers, Tom Camden, Kent Dunn.
Rockbridge County and Lexington sheriff – Tony McFaddin, Christopher Norris, Fred Smith. (Because this is a special election to fill an unexpired term, the deadline to file as a candidate for this office is Aug. 15.) -In last week’s Republican primary, incumbent Del. Terry Austin easily dispatched of his GOP challenger, Austen Schwend, in the 37th District House of Delegates race, garnering nearly 68 percent of the vote. In the fall election, Austin will face Democratic Party nominee Sharron Burgess.
In other primary elections held last Tuesday, June 17, Jay Jones and Ghazala F. Hashmi won the Democratic Party’s nominations for, respectively, lieutenant governor and attorney general. Jones collected 51.1 percent of the vote to defeat Shannon Taylor. Hashmi emerged victorious in a six-person race with 27.45 percent of the vote. Her nearest opponents were Levar Stoney (26.53 percent) and Aaron Rouse (26.28 percent).
