Area wheat crops were faced with the problem of wheat scab, a fungal disease that causes discoloration and reduced production. -A quorum of 18 members of the Brownsburg Elementary School PTA voted to dissolve the organization because the school would not be elementary level the next year. - Restoration of the exterior of the Davidson-Tucker House on East Washington Street was completed by the Historic Lexington Foundation. The work included removal of the large structure connecting it with the Stonewall Jackson House when both buildings housed the old hospital.

Mark Warner, then governor of Virginia, fell from his bike while participating in Bike Virginia in Goshen. He broke two bones in his right hand and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
- There was a fiery debate at a meeting of the Buena Vista School Board. At issue was the question of the appropriateness of fifth graders attending school dances.
- St. Patrick’s Catholic Church held a potluck supper to welcome its new pastor, Father Joseph D’Aurora. - Representatives of Project Horizon traveled to Washington, D.C., as part of a state delegation to impress upon Congress the need to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act, set to expire Sept. 30.
