Celebrating New Era In Workforce Development

Letters

June 23, 2025 Editor, The News-Gazette: On June 20, our region marked a transformational milestone with the grand opening of the Joe Wilson Workforce Center in Buena Vista. This project – five years in the making – represents far more than a new building. It is a bold investment in people, potential, and the future of our communities.

Thanks to the generosity of more than 130 donors and the leadership of Mountain Gateway Community College, this $7.3 million facility will provide hands-on training in high-demand trades like welding, diesel technology, CDL, and building trades. The center is expected to create over 160 new jobs, retain nearly 500, and bring over $11 million in economic impact to our region.

We are especially grateful to Joe Wilson, whose gift of the building laid the cornerstone for this endeavor. We also thank the Philip E. & Carole R. Ratcliffe Foundation, the U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration, and many other public and private partners. This project is a shining example of regional collaboration. I’m particularly proud that our three local governments not only contributed financially but supported this vision fully – from concept to completion. A special recognition goes to the c of Buena Vista, whose collaboration was essential to this effort.

The Joe Wilson Workforce Center stands as a testament to what we can achieve through vision, partnership and perseverance. It’s a powerful reminder that when we invest in workforce education, we empower individuals and uplift entire communities.

DR. JOHN RAINONE president, Mountain Gateway Community College
