On Sunday, June 8, the congregation of Glasgow Baptist Church honored Pastor Wes Young Jr. with a covered-dish dinner for his 75th birthday and his first year as pastor.
Andi Bradley of Glasgow represented our local Walmart at the annual shareholders event at the home office in Arkansas. During the week, Walmart associates attended meetings, concerts, a ballgame, toured the campus and museum of the history of the Walmart family and founders of Walmart. A great time was had by all, but there was a little hiccup in the trip back home. The flight from Fayetteville was delayed, causing a missed connection in Charlotte, N.C. Instead of arriving back in Roanoke on Friday night, they ended up getting a flight into Lynchburg on Saturday morning. Andi was very tired and happy to be back in Virginia. Her luggage took a little longer to arrive. The airline retrieved it and had it sent to her home a couple days later.
The Concerned Citizens celebrated Juneteenth with a dedication of their new pavilion on Saturday, June 14. There was recognition of those who played a huge part in making the pavilion reality. Music was provided by the Voices of Union, the Men’s Chorus and band from Union Baptist Church. Dave VanOsten and Preston Sledd cut the ribbon. Various persons were recognized and spoke briefly including Susan Burgess, Democratic candidate for the House of Delegates; Fred Smith, running for sheriff of Rockbridge County; and Reginald A. Early and Marquita Dunn representing the local chapter of the NAACP. The Concerned Citizens served a meal of hamburgers, hotdogs, barbecue, chicken and side dishes.
