W&L’s Gyscek DIII Coach Of Year
Pete Gyscek, head coach of the Washington and Lee University men’s golf team, was named 2025 Division III Dave Williams Coach of the Year by Golf Coaches Association of America and presented by Golf Pride Grips on Tuesday, June 3.
The Dave Williams Award honors the top coach in each division of collegiate men’s golf. It recognizes excellence in national ranking, team performance and sportsmanship throughout the season. Gyscek, the Thomas R. Wall IV ‘80 head men’s golf Coach, guided the team to several program records.
Gyscek is in his 11th season leading the Generals. This season was the most successful in program history, and this is the first time a W&L men’s golf coach has been named a finalist or recipient of this national honor.
It is the first Dave Williams Award of Gyscek’s multidivisional coaching career. He also received the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Jack Jensen Coach of the Year honor after leading the Generals to a runnerup finish at the conference championship, highlighted by a tournament-low 277 in the final round.
With the coaching of Gyscek, the Generals achieved the program’s firstever No. 1 national ranking in October and November. They also had a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Division III Championship resulting from a fourth straight top-10 finish.
The Generals captured three tournament titles, including Golfweek October Classic and Savannah Invitational. Both tournaments feature nationally ranked opponents.
Gyscek guided the team to several program records, including most team wins in a season (tied, three), lowest team round to par (-16 at Golfweek Invitational), rounds under par (18 of 26), a team-record winning percentage of .900 (171-19-0), and an adjusted scoring average of 283.2.
The team also had the lowest 54-hole team score to par (-30 at Golfweek) and lowest 36-hole team score to par (-15 at Capital City.)
Four W&L golfers earned PING All-Region IV honors this spring, including First Team All-American and Division III Golfer of the Year Jonathan McEwen and ODAC Rookie of the Year Timothy Kaufman.
Gyscek’s leadership proved pivotal as the Blue and White carded 17 top-10 individual finishes across nine strokeplay tournaments, drawing consistent performance and leadership from senior cocaptains Elias Malakoff and Will Braxton. Strong contributions were brought by first-year players Timothy Kaufman and Charlie Krasnewich and sophomore Jonathan McEwen.
W&L finished in the top four in eight of nine stroke play tournaments. The team ended the season ranked No. 2 nationally via Scoreboard powered by Clippd.
