June 9, 2025 Editor, The News-Gazette: This Flag Day, June 14, marks two important milestones: a celebration of our nation’s enduring symbol and the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States Army — a force created to defend liberty and the rights of We the People. It’s a moment to reflect on the values that define us as Americans — liberty, service, accountability and government by the people.
At a time when our nation faces growing threats to democratic norms, it’s more important than ever to stand up for those founding principles. That’s why 50 Ways Rockbridge and Hearts for Democracy are organizing a “No Kings” Rally on Flag Day, Saturday, June 14, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Hopkins Green in Lexington.
We invite everyone — Democrats, Republicans and independents — to come together in defense of the Constitution, the rule of law, and the idea that no one, not even a president, is above accountability. This is not a partisan event — it’s a patriotic one.
We also honor the service members and veterans who have sworn an oath to protect and defend the Constitution. Their courage and sacrifice remind us that safeguarding democracy is not just a military duty — it’s a civic one, too. Their dedication inspires us to fulfill our own civic duty — to speak out, stand up and protect the freedoms they have risked so much to defend.
Join us as we raise our voices for liberty, justice and a government that serves the people. Because in America, there are no kings. DAVE WALSH Lexington
