The Rockbridge County School Board voted unanimously to convert Brownsburg Elementary to a junior high school, set July 2 as the date to open bids for the county’s proposed vocational- technical school, and took further steps toward putting an addition on Natural Bridge High School. -A film crew from the BBC was in the area filming a segment on the invention of the reaper. The segment was part of a two-hour bicentennial special for the BBC and NBC. - Newcomer Ford was having a “Pinto Day” in which people could participate in a drawing to win a 1975 Ford Pinto. The Pinto was notorious for catching fire during read-end collisions.

About 900 people participated in a two-day re-enactment of Hunter’s Raid at the Virginia Horse Center. - Rod Smith, editor of Shenandoah: the Washington and Lee University Review, was awarded a Pushcart Prize for his short story, “Jesus Wept.” --- Two hundred twentysix students were awarded diplomas at Rockbridge County High School’s commencement ceremony held at Cameron Hall. During the exercises, retiring guidance counselor Carol Phemister received a standing ovation.
