June 4, 1975

A young man by the name of John Whitesell announced his intention to run as an independent candidate for the seat of supervisor from the Walkers Creek District. - The number of people using federal food stamps in the Lexington-Buena Vista-Rockbridge area nearly doubled in 1974. The jump in stamp users was attributed to inflation, which drove up the cost of food, and to the area’s high unemployment rate. - Lexington police were investigating the theft of approximately $1,000 from the White Column Inn. Capt. J.A. Kirby said that a bag containing $700 in cash and the remainder in checks was taken from the restaurant on North Main Street.

Harry Stone retired after 32 years with the Rockbridge County school system. He started his career at the old Natural Bridge High School where he taught math. - Dr. Edward Murphy, president and CEO of Carilion Health System, spoke in a town hall type meeting with 50 concerned citizens in attendance about the future of Stonewall Jackson Hospital. Murphy assured the crowd that the hospital’s services would remain intact and no large layoffs were planned. --- New touch-screen voting machines arrived in the area in time for the primary election.
