A third member of Lexington’s Public Works Department has completed Virginia Local Technical Assistance Program’s Road Safety Champion Program.

Cody Taylor completed the program earlier this year with a specialization in planning and engineering. He joins more than 50 other Road Safety Champions throughout the state, including Scott Dameron, deputy director of Lexington’s Public Works Department, who completed the program in 2021 with a focus on planning and engineering and in 2022 with a focus on maintenance and construction; and Doug Sisson, who completed the program in 2023 with a focus on planning and engineering.

“We’re incredibly proud of Cody for earning his Road Safety Champion designation,” Patrick Madigan, director of Lexington’s Department of Public Works, told The News-Gazette. “His commitment to professional development and dedication to keeping our roadways safe truly reflects the values of our department. Cody is the third member of our Public Works team to achieve this recognition, and that speaks volumes about the culture of excellence we’re building here in Lexington.”

The Road Safety Champion Program is a certificate program designed to improve the safety training of those responsible for operating, maintaining, designing, and enforcing local roads. The long-term goal is to build a knowledgeable workforce that is motivated to implement safety improvements that reduce injuries and fatalities on rural and local roadways. The RSCP is a “Roadway Safety 101” course made up of core modules and career focused pathways for staff in transportation, public works, public health, and first responder agencies that have an interest in roadway safety but are not safety experts. The program is really for anyone who is interested in making Virginia Roads safer.
