New School Chief Named

The Buena Vista School Board last week named Dr. Heather Gentry-Ault as the division’s next superintendent. She will assume the role on July 1.

She succeeds Dr. Tony Francis, who has served as superintendent since 2021.

Gentry-Ault currently serves as director of instruction for Amelia County Public Schools, a position she has held since 2023. Her career in public education spans nearly 25 years and includes experience as a teacher, principal, human resources director, and administrator in several Virginia school divisions.

“I am incredibly thankful and excited to join Buena Vista City Public Schools,” Gentry-Ault said in a statement. “I appreciate the School Board’s confidence in me, and I look forward to working collaboratively with the community, families, educators, and board members. Together, we will build on the division’s strengths and work collaboratively to elevate student success.”

School Board Chair Teresa Ellison said the Board is confident in the new hire.

“We are excited to welcome Dr. Gentry-Ault,” Ellison said. “Her strong leadership, collaborative spirit, and deep commitment to students and families make her an ideal fit for our division and community.”

Gentry-Ault began her education career in Richmond County Public Schools in 2000. She has since served as an assistant principal in King William County, a principal in both Essex and Chesterfield counties, and director of human resources in Amelia County before stepping into her current instructional leadership role.

She holds a Doctor of Education in Educational Policy, Planning and Leadership from the College of William and Mary, a Master of Education from Regent University, and a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Lock Haven University.

The Virginia School Boards Association assisted with the superintendent search process.
