Parry McCluer Girls Net Pioneer Title

Parry McCluer Girls Net Pioneer Title

The Parry McCluer High School girls tennis team defeated Narrows 5-3 to win the Pioneer District title last week, PM senior Olive King captured the district singles title, and Blues Peira Conner and Keely Mahaffey were runners-up in the district doubles tournament.

The Fighting Blues (7-3 overall, 3-1 district), who had split a pair of 5-4 matches with Narrows during the regular season, came out on top on Monday morning of last week at Glenvar High School in Salem.

PM, which finished second to Bath County in the district last year, won two of three doubles matches against Narrows last week and claimed three of six singles contests, with the match at No. 3 singles not finishing because the contest had already been decided. Singles winners for PM were King at No. 1, senior Macy Shafer at No. 2, and sophomore Keely Mahaffey at No. 4.

King went on to win the district singles tournament by default due to a medical forfeit last Wednesday at the Southern Virginia University courts in Buena Vista.

In the doubles tournament, also in Buena Vista, Conner and Mahaffey lost 6-4, 7-6 (7-4 tiebreak) in the finals to Raigen Clark and Brooklyn McCroskey from Narrows “The girls had a tough battle and came back [from a 5-2 deficit] in the second set but weren’t able to get the win,” said PM head coach Alyssa Sewell.

In the Region 1C team tournament, the Blues were scheduled to play host to Bland County yesterday at the SVU courts.

King will play in the Region 1C singles tournament on Monday, and Conner and Mahaffey will team up for the Region 1C doubles tournament on Tuesday. Both tournaments will be at George Wythe and will start at 9 a.m.
