RC Girls End Season

The season concluded for the Rockbridge County High School girls tennis team last week, with junior Corinna Allen falling in the first round of the Valley District singles tournament and Allen and senior Julia Newhall losing in the quarterfinals of the doubles tournament. Both tournaments took place at East Rockingham High School in Elkton.

In the singles tournament, which was on Monday of last week, Rocktown’s Molly Wells defeated Allen 6-3, 6-2 in the first round.

Allen and Newhall, the fifth seed in the doubles tournament, teamed up on Tuesday of last week to challenge Broadway’s Tessa Bacon and Clara Denman, the fourth seed, but the Broadway duo won 7-6 (7-2 tiebreak), 6-3. Bacon and Denman went on to lose in the semifinals to Spotswood’s Ella Li and Emerson Knight, who would go on to win the district title.

As a team, it was a rebuilding year for the Wildcats, who went winless, going 0-13 overall and 0-12 in the Valley District.

The Wildcats will miss their four seniors: Newhall, Campbell Bond, Eleanor Goodhart and Keely Newman. They’ll look to Allen and two rising juniors who were starters, Ava Crocker and Diya Gandhi, to lead them next year.
