The Rockbridge County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Tuesday that human remains recovered last month near Glasgow have been positively identified as Dustin Cody Butler, who was reported missing in 2022.
The identification was made by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner through a combination of DNA analysis and dental record comparison.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Mr. Butler,” said Rockbridge County Sheriff Tony McFaddin. “We remain committed to seeking answers and ensuring justice. We also thank the community for its continued cooperation and support during this investigation.”
The human remains were located April 18 in the Sallings Mountain Road and Forge Road area after two days of searching by the sheriff’s office and partnering agencies.
Butler was last seen on Dec. 5, 2022, at a residence in Glasgow, where he got into an argument with someone at the residence and departed on foot, according to a January 2023 post from the Aware Foundation.
Anyone with information relevant to this case is urged to contact the sheriff’s office at (540) 463-7328.
