Local Teams Advance Monday

In high school playoff action on Monday, both the Parry Mc-Cluer softball and baseball teams won in the Pioneer District tournament, while the PM girls tennis team defeated Narrows in a match to determine the Pioneer District regular-season title. For Rockbridge County, senior Nic Vargas won the Valley District boys tennis singles title.

The PM softball team (5-11 overall, 3-2 district), the second seed in the tournament, earned a 10-3 win over third-seeded Narrows (2-12, 1-4) in the district semifinals. The game was closer than the two regular-season games between the Fighting Blues and the Green Wave, both won by PM In the district championship game. The Blues will travel to Elliston to face top seed Eastern Montgomery (9-6, 5-0) today, Wednesday, at 5 p.m. During the regular season, EM beat the Blues twice.

In the district baseball quarterfinals, the fifth-seeded Blues (5-12, 3-6) pulled off an 11-9 upset win at fourth-seeded Eastern Montgomery (10-5-1, 4-4). The teams had split their two regularseason contests. For the district semifinal game yesterday at 5 p.m., the Blues traveled to face top seed Narrows (13-2, 8-0).

The PM girls tennis team (7-3, 3-1), which had split a pair of 5-4 contests with Narrows during the regular season, won 5-3 Monday morning at Glenvar High School in Salem. PM is scheduled to play host for the Pioneer District singles and doubles tournaments today, Wednesday, at the Southern Virginia University courts, starting at 10 a.m. In the first round Region 1C team tournament, the Blues will play host to Bland County next Tuesday, May 27, at 10 a.m. at SVU.

In the Valley District singles tournament at East Rockingham High School in Elkton, Vargas earned a 7-6 (8-6 tiebreak), 6-1 win over Spotswood’s Nate Lees. The two players split a pair of matches during the regular season. Vargas improved to 12-1 in district singles matches.
