Helping Hands

Supporters Of Pavilion Project Thanked

One hundred twenty Timber Framers from across the country, as well as some from Canada and Estonia, came together in early April to build a pavilion at the Thompson Community Center in Glasgow.

Led by Grigg and Cindy Mullen and Grigg Mullen III, this was the 51st project that the Timber Framers have built over decades in the Rockbridge area. Two VMI cadets designed this pavilion in their civil engineering wood engineering class, led by VMI adjunct professor Donald Martin and Col. Charles Newhouse, department head. Other VMI cadets assisted in the construction as part of the VMI FTX program.

The new pavilion is on the grounds of the Thompson Community Center, 207 Catawba St., and is operated by the Concerned Citizens of Glasgow (CCoG).

CCoG members Preston Sledd and Dave VanOsten began attending timber frame projects last year in anticipation of the project and did much of the ground work to prepare for the build: getting donations, working on pouring a slab and site preparation.

CCoG is very grateful for financial donations received from the Grace Episcopal Church’s Gadsden Trust; the Community Foundation of Rockbridge, Bath and Alleghany, the Rockbridge NAACP, and members of the CCoG and Union Baptist Church.

This project could not have been done without the generous donations of wood, supplies and services provided by Tom Sheets of Blue Ridge Lumber, Northcott Wood Turning, Rothoblaas, DuBose Eleston, Heritage Natural Finishes, Charles W. Barger and Son, Rockbridge Stone Products, Shelby Clements, and Jimmy Southers.

Thank you also goes to everyone who provided meals to the builders: CHEFS Catering, Food Lion Buena Vista, Scotto’s Pizza, LDS Church, Glasgow Garden Club, Lexington Moose Lodge, Union Baptist Church, and the CCoG. Thanks also to those who provided discounted meals: Domino’s Pizza, Grace Episcopal Church, Sunrise Diner, Good Karma, Kenney’s Lexington, and Sweet Treats.

Thanks also to Washington and Lee University for supplying paper and plastic products; Natalie and Roger Clevinger and Lucy and Ed Hayes for providing housing for some of the builders; and Bob Smith and Joanne Peretti for preparing vegetarian and gluten free meals.

Thanks to those who provided desserts and snacks: CornerStone Bank, Chick-Fil-A, McKee’s Family Bakery, Preston Sledd, Diana Dymachek, Joanne Robblee, Mary Wilson, Linda Wilder, Nelle Busch, Tasha Walsh, Elaine Nelson, Kerri-Ann and James Prince, Marianna Higgins, Rachel Chipley, Kristina Ramsey, Regina Jones, Debbie Funkhouser, Lisa Tracy, Keshia Hartwell, and Rockbridge NAACP.

A big thank you to everyone who helped with preparation and serving meals: Rachel Jones, Joyce Carter, Laverne Cooper, Tonita Rogers, Gretchen Wilder, Regina Jones, Marsha Nowlin, Sunzraye and Chris McCargo, Linda Hartwill, Peggy and Dave Agnor, Teresa Ellison, Eloise Moore, Brenda Hunt, and Kathy Fox.
