Car Strikes Power Pole

A car ran into a power line pole Monday afternoon just north of Lexington, resulting in injuries to both occupants, a road closure that lasted hours and a power outage in the area.

Virginia State Police said the crash occurred at 4:30 p.m. when a 2004 Toyota Camry ran off the right side of Old Buena Vista Road just east of its intersection with U.S. 11, struck a ground pipe and a power pole, then overturned.

The driver, identified as 37-year-old Santana M. Martinez of Lexington, and a 29-year-old male passenger were not wearing seatbelts, according to state police. Both were transported to the hospital with minor injuries The driver was charged with reckless driving. Lexington Fire Chief Ty Dickerson said emergency crews arrived to find the car on its roof and a broken telephone pole with multiple transformers hanging from its top section. The two occupants had already gotten out of the vehicle and were waiting across the street when responders arrived.

The Virginia Department of Transportation and Dominion Energy were called to assist with a road closure and power outage.
