Collierstown

The income from the event will be used to serve the greater Effinger community and its families. The next EVFD barbecue chicken sale is scheduled for July 19.

On Sunday, May 17 prior to the morning worship service, the Collierstown Presbyterian Church’s Backyard Missions Team shared with the congregation the work accomplished by the team on its one-day mission trip to the Appalachian Community Relief Warehouse in Black Mountain, N.C., on May 3. Morgan Martin and Elaine Higgins described the work done by community and church member volunteers as they assisted the center’s staff unpacking, sorting, and organizing donations, while assisting shoppers visiting the center. They extended appreciation to the congregation for the financial and prayer support provided to make the mission trip possible.

Following the Backyard Mission team’s report, Roger Lees was invited to make a special presentation on behalf of the Effinger Ruritan Club. Each year the Effinger Ruritan Club presents the Nelson Wilson Hall Memorial Scholarship to a high school senior who has indicated a desire for continued education and has demonstrated outstanding scholarship and community involvement. Lees announced this year’s recipient is Morgan Martin, daughter of John and Shelley Martin. He invited her to come forward and receive the scholarship in the amount of $3500 and to be recognized by the congregation. Morgan will be attending Virginia Tech in the fall as a chemistry major with plans to become an ophthalmologist.

The Palmer Community Center located at 1230 Blue Grass Trail, Lexington will be the location for a free community dinner provided by Rockbridge CAN (Rockbridge Connect and Nourish). The meal will be served from 6 to 7 p.m. It is a dine-in event. Those needing transportation may call (540) 463-3346 to arrange a free ride to and from the event.

The annual community Memorial Day service will be held on Sunday, May 25, at 12:30 p.m. on top of the cemetery hill at the Collierstown Presbyterian Church. The service will honor those who have served in the military and are buried in the church cemetery. In the event of inclement weather, the service will be held at the same time in the church sanctuary. The public is invited to attend.

Vacation Bible School for the Buffalo and Collierstown communities will be held the week of June 8-12 at the Palmer Community Center. VBS will run from 6:15- 8 p.m. nightly and offer classes for all ages. Families and area residents are invited to come and enjoy Bible study, crafts and recreation. This year vacation Bible school is being sponsored by the seven community churches: Collierstown Baptist, Collierstown and Mt. Horeb United Methodist Churches, Collierstown and Oxford Presbyterian Churches, Rapps Mill Church, and the Union View Advent Christian Church.

The Collierstown Presbyterian Cemetery Committee has announced effective July 1 the cost for cemetery spaces will increase to $400 each for members and $1000 each for non-members.
